king of See also:Bithynia, 91–74 B.C., was the son and successor of Nicomedes II. His See also:brother See also:Socrates, assisted by See also:Mithradates, drove him out, but he was reinstated by the See also:Romans (9o). He was again expelled by Mithradates, who defeated him on the See also:river Amneus (or Amnias) in See also:Paphlagonia. This led to the first Mithradatic See also:War, as the result of which Nicomedes was again restored (84). At his See also:death he bequeathed his See also:kingdom to the Romans, a See also:legacy which subsequently brought about the third Mithradatic War.
