NIERSTEIN , a See also:

village of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand duchy of See also:Hesse-See also:Darmstadt, on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Rhine, 8 m. S. from See also:Mainz by the railway to See also:Worms. Pop. (19o5) 4445• It contains a See also:Roman See also:Catholic and a See also:Protestant See also:church, an old Roman See also:bath—Sironabad—and See also:sulphur springs. It is famous for its wines, in which a large export See also:trade is done. Nierstein was originally a Roman See also:settlement, and was a royal See also:residence under the Carolingian rulers. Later it passed from the See also:emperor to the elector See also:palatine of the Rhine.
