NORTH See also:SHIELDS , a seaport of See also:Northumberland, See also:England, within the municipal and See also:parliamentary See also:borough of See also:Tynemouth (q.v. for See also:history, &c.). 'The See also:town of that name adjoins it on the E. It lies on the N. See also:bank of the See also:Tyne, immediately above its mouth, and opposite to See also:South Shields in See also:Durham, 7i M. E. of See also:Newcastle by a See also:branch of the North Eastern railway. It is a town of See also:modern growth, and contains the municipal offices of the borough, a See also:custom-See also:house and various benevolent institutions for See also:seamen. The See also:harbour is enclosed by north and south piers, and there is a See also:depth of 29 ft. at See also:spring-tides besides the quays. See also:Coal and See also:coke are largely exported, and See also:corn, See also:timber and See also:esparto grass are imported. There is an extensive See also:fish See also:quay, and about 14,000 tons of fish are landed annually. There are See also:engineering, See also:iron, See also:salt and earthenware See also:works, and some See also:shipbuilding is carried on.
