OBOK , a seaport on the See also:

north See also:shore of the Gulf of Tajura, N.E. See also:Africa, acquired by See also:France in 1862. It gave its name to the See also:colony of Obok, now merged in the See also:French Somali See also:coast See also:protectorate (see See also:SOMALILAND: French). The See also:port is separated from the open See also:sea by See also:coral reefs, but is only partially sheltered from the winds. This led to the See also:practical See also:abandonment of the See also:town by the French, who in 1896 transferred to See also:Jibuti, on the opposite shore of the Gulf of Tajura, the seat of See also:government of the colony. Obok is connected with See also:Aden and Jibuti by sub-marine cables. See also:Population about 500.
