OPON , a See also:

town of the See also:province of See also:Cebu, Philippine Islands, on the small See also:island of Mactan (See also:area about 45 sq. m.), which is separated from the island of Cebu by a channel only about / m. wide. Pop (1903), after the See also:annexation of See also:Cordova and See also:Santa See also:Rosa, 20,166. There are See also:forty-four barrios, or villages, in the town, and three of these had in 1903 more than moo inhabitants each. The See also:language is Visayan: Opon is a See also:shipping and commercial suburb of Cebu See also:city, the See also:harbour of which is sheltered by Mactan Island. The town has large groves of coco-See also:nut trees, and its See also:principal See also:industries are the cultivation of See also:Indian See also:corn and maguey and fishing. In the N.E. See also:part of the town is a See also:monument to See also:Magellan, who discovered the Philippines in See also:March 1521, and was slain here by the natives See also:late in the following See also:month.
