See also:ROSA, See also:MONTE , the name of a See also:great See also:glacier-clad See also:mountain See also:mass (the name comes from the Aostan See also:patois word rase, meaning a glacier) which rises S.E. of See also:Zermatt, and on the frontier between See also:Switzerland (See also:canton of the See also:Valais) and See also:Italy. Ten summits in this huge mass are distinguished by name, of which four (the Nordend, 15,132 ft., the Zumsteinspitze, 15,004 ft., the Signalkuppe or Punta Gnifetti, 14,965 ft., and the Parrotspitze, 14,643 ft.) rise on the frontier. The five See also:lower summits are on the See also:Italian slope, but the highest of all, the Dufourspitze, 15,217 ft. (so named by the Swiss See also:government in See also:honour of See also:General See also:Dufour, the See also:head of the great survey which first accurately fixed the position of these points), rises W. of the frontier See also:ridge, on a See also:buttress, and is thus entirely in Switzer-See also:land, of which it is the culminating See also:peak (and not, as often stated, the Dom, 14,942 ft., in the Mischabel See also:group). The loftiest point of the Dufourspitze was first attained in 1855 by a large See also:English party, which included Messrs G. and C. See also:Smyth, C. See also:Hudson, See also:Birkbeck and See also:Stevenson. The Zumsteinspitze was first climbed in 182o, the Signalkuppe (on See also:top of which there is now a See also:club hut) in 1842, the Nordend in 1861 and the Parrotspitze in 1863. The ascent of all the points named is not difficult from the Swiss See also:side, but excessively dangerous on the See also:east or Italian side. (W. A. B.
