ORTIGUEIRA , a seaport of See also:

north-western See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Corunna; on the See also:northern slope of the Sierra de la Faladoira, on the See also:river Nera and on the eastern See also:shore of the Ria de See also:Santa Marta—a winding, See also:rock-See also:bound and much indented inlet of the See also:Bay of See also:Biscay, between Capes Ortegal and Vares, the northern-most headlands of the See also:Peninsula. The See also:official See also:total of the in- 341 habitants of Ortigueira (18,426 in 1900) includes many families which dwell at some distance; the actual See also:urban See also:population does not exceed 2000. The See also:industries are fishing and farming. Owing to the shallowness of the See also:harbour large vessels cannot enter, but there is an important See also:coasting See also:trade, despite the dangerous See also:character of the See also:coast-See also:line and the prevalence of fogs and See also:gales. The See also:sea-bathing and magnificent scenery attract visitors in summer even to this remote See also:district, which has no railway and few See also:good roads.
