It is situated on a promontory 230 ft. above See also:sea-level, and connected with the See also:port below by a See also:wire-rope railway. From the ruined See also:castle magnificent views to the See also:south as far as the Punta di Penna can be obtained.-See also:ORVIETO The See also:cathedral has been restored at various times, but preserves a See also:fine portal of 1312 by a See also:local artist, Nicolo See also:Mancini. At one See also:side of it is the Palazzo de Pirris with five pointed windows. The town occupies the site of the See also:ancient Ortona, a seaport of the See also:Frentani; it See also:lay on the See also:Roman See also:coast-road, which here turned inland to Anxanum (See also:Lanciano), ro m. to the S. The town suffered much from the ravages of the See also:Turks, who laid it in ruins in 1566, and also from frequent earthquakes.
