town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, stands on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Kama, on the See also:great See also:highway to See also:Siberia, 1130 M. by See also:rail and See also:river N.E. from See also:Moscow. Pop. (1879), 32,350; (1897), 45,403. During summer it has See also:regular See also:steam communication with Kazan, 605 m. distant, and it is connected by rail (311 m.) with See also:Ekaterinburg on the See also:east See also:side of the Urals. The town is mostly built of See also:wood, with broad streets and wide squares, and has a somewhat poor aspect, especially when compared with Ekaterinburg. It is the seat of a' See also:bishop of the Orthodox See also:Greek See also:Church, and has an ecclesiastical See also:seminary and a military school, besides several scientific institutions (the Ural society of natural sciences, archives See also:committee, technical society), and a scientific museum. Its See also:industries develop but slowly, the See also:chief See also:works being See also:ship-See also:building yards, tanneries, chemical works, saw-See also:mills, brickfields, See also:copper foundries, machinery works, See also:soap and See also:candle factories and rope-works. The government has a manufactory of See also:steel guns and munitions of See also:war in the immediate neighbourhood of the town. The See also:present site of Perm was occupied, as See also:early as 1568, by a See also:settlement named Brukhanovo, founded by one of the Stroganovs; this settlement seems to have received the name of Perm in the 17th See also:century. A copperworks was founded in the immediate neighbourhood in 1723, and in 1781 it received officially the name of Perm, and became an administrative centre both for the See also:country and for the See also:mining region.
