PETERHOF , a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of St See also:Petersburg, 18 m. W. of the See also:capital, on the See also:south See also:coast of the Gulf of See also:Finland. It was founded in 1711 and has grown up See also:round the See also:palace built by See also:Peter the See also:Great in 1720; pop., 11,300. Peterhof is almost exclusively a residential town, but See also:gem-cutting and the manufacture of agricultural implements are carried on. The palace has undergone alterations and additions, e.g. by Catharine II., but retains a distinct Petrine See also:stamp. It is builton a height 50 ft. above the See also:sea, and contains portraits of the See also:Russian imperial See also:family and other pictures. A statue of Peter the Great was set up near the palace in 1883, and one of See also:Francis I. of See also:France in 1896, a See also:gift from the town of See also:Havre to See also:Nicholas II. Peterhof is connected with See also:Oranienbaum on the See also:west and with Stryelna on the See also:east by See also:series of gardens and villas.
