In 1854 he became director of the geographical See also:institute of Justus See also:Perthes in See also:Gotha, and editor of the well-known Petermanns Mitteilungen. His See also:work did much towards elucidating the See also:geography of the interior of Africa and of the See also:North Polar regions. See also:Queen See also:Victoria, at the See also:suggestion of See also:Bunsen, appointed him physical geographer-royal. Petermann died by his own See also:hand at Gotha on the 25th of See also:September 1878.
