PIRANO , a seaport of See also:Austria, in See also:Istria, 22 M. S.W. of See also:Trieste by See also:rail. Pop. (1900), 13,339, mostly Italians. In addition to viticulture and the cultivation of the See also:olive, its See also:principal resources are See also:ship-See also:building and fishing. In the neighbourhood are the most extensive See also:works in Istria for the extraction of See also:salt from the See also:sea-See also:water, which produce about 5o,000 tons of salt annually. Pirano is celebrated for the victory of the Venetians over the See also:fleet of the See also:emperor See also:Frederick See also:Barbarossa in 1177. It passed under the domination of See also:Venice in 1283 and became definitely incorporated with Austria, together with the other possessions of Venice in the Istrian See also:Peninsula, in 1813.
