POLONNARUWA , a ruined See also:city and See also:ancient See also:capital of See also:Ceylon. It first became a royal See also:residence in A.D. 368, when the See also:lake of Topawewa was formed, and succeeded See also:Anuradhapura as the capital in the See also:middle of the 8th See also:century. The See also:principal ruins date chiefly from the See also:time of Prakrama Bahu (A.D. 1153-1186). The most imposing See also:pile remaining is the Jetawanarama See also:temple, a See also:building 170 it. in length, with walls about 8o ft. high and 12 ft. thick. The city is now entirely deserted, and, as in the See also:case of Anuradhapura, its ruins have only recently been rescued from the See also:jungle.
