PONTARLIER , a frontier See also:

town of eastern See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Doubs, 36 m. S.E. of See also:Besancon by road. Pop. (woe), 7896. It is situated 2750 ft. above See also:sea-level on the Doubs, about four See also:miles from the Swiss frontier, and forms an important strategic point at the mouth of the See also:defile of La Cluse, one of the See also:principal passes across the See also:Jura. The pass is defended by the See also:modern fort of Larmont, and by the Fort de Joux, which was originally built in the loth See also:century by the See also:family of Joux and played a conspicuous See also:part in the See also:history of Franche-See also:Comte. Pontarlier is the junction of railway lines to See also:Neuchatel, See also:Lausanne, Lons-le-Saunier, See also:Dole and Besancon. A triumphal See also:arch of the 18th century commemorates the reconstruction of the town after the destructive See also:fire of 1736. It was at Pontarlier that the See also:French See also:army of the See also:East made its last stand against the Prussians in 1871 before See also:crossing the Swiss frontier. The See also:distillation of herbs, extensively cultivated for the manufacture of See also:absinthe, See also:kirsch and other See also:liqueurs, is the See also:chief See also:industry. The town is the seat of a sub See also:prefect and has a tribunal of first instance and a communal See also:college.
