PORTICI , a See also:town of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Naples, 5 M. S.E. of Naples by See also:rail, on the shores of the See also:bay, and at the See also:foot of See also:Vesuvius. Pop. (1901), 14,239. The See also:palace, erected in 1738, is traversed by the high road. It once contained the antiquities from See also:Herculaneum, now removed to Naples, and since '882 it has been a See also:government school of See also:agriculture. There is a small See also:harbour. Just beyond Portici, on the See also:south See also:east, is Resina (pop, in 1901, !o,182), on the site of the See also:ancient Herculaneum, with several See also:fine See also:modern villas. The inhabitants are engaged in fishing, See also:silk-growing and silk-See also:weaving. The town was completely destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631.
