PUERPERAL See also:FEVER (See also:Lat. puerpera, from Auer, See also:child, and parcre, to bring forth) , the name given to the varieties of See also:general infection, See also:long regarded as a specific disease (" child-See also:bed fever," " lying-in fever "), to which See also:women are subject after parturition, owing to the genital See also:tract being peculiarly exposed, in septic surroundings, to the invasion of pathogenic bacteria (see See also:SEPSIS). Owing largely to the labours of I. P. See also:Semmelweiss (q.v.) the See also:grave mortality formerly attending this See also:condition has been enormously reduced; and the See also:necessity of rigid cleanliness in the treatment of lying-in cases is fully recognized. When unhappily this is not the See also:case, and infection takes See also:place, its complications must be treated according to the circumstances, antiseptic douching being employed, or preferably curetting the endometrium with a See also:sharp curette and swabbing with disinfectant See also:solution. In definitely septicaemia cases antistreptococcic serum may be useful.
