SALTILLO , a See also:city and the See also:capital of the See also:state of See also:Coahuila, See also:Mexico, about 615 m. by See also:rail N. by W. of the city of Mexico. Pop. (190o) 23,996. Saltillo is on the Mexican See also:National railway and another railway connects it with the important See also:mining and See also:industrial See also:town of Torreon, on the Mexican Central. The city is on the See also:great central See also:plateau of Mexico, about 5200 ft. above See also:sea-level. It has a cool and healthy See also:climate, and is a resort in summer for the See also:people of the tropical See also:coast districts, and in See also:winter for invalids from the See also:north. The city is laid out in See also:regular squares, with shady streets and plazas. The residences are of the See also:Spanish colonial type, with heavy walls and large rooms to insure coolness during the See also:heat of the See also:day. Among its public institutions are a national See also:college, an See also:athenaeum, the Madero See also:Institute with a See also:good library, some See also:fine churches, and the charitable institutions See also:common to all Mexican cities. Saltillo is an active commercial and manufacturing town, and an important railway centre. Its manufactures include See also:cotton and woollen fabrics, knitted goods and See also:flour. The woollen " zarapes " or " ponchos" of Saltillo are among the finest produced in Mexico. There are undeveloped See also:coal deposits in the vicinity. Saltillo was founded in 1586 as an outpost against the See also:Apache See also:Indians. It became an incorporated city in 1827. In 1824 the capital of the state of Coahuila and See also:Texas was at Saltillo. A See also:partisan controversy removed the seat of See also:government to Monclova in 1833, but it was returned to Saltillo in 1835. The See also:battle of Buena Vista was fought near Saltillo on the 22nd-23rd of See also:February 1847. After leaving See also:San Luis See also:Potosi, See also:President See also:Juarez estabiished his capital at Saltillo for a brief See also:period.
