SANTO DOMINGO , the See also:

capital of the See also:republic of the same name, in the See also:island of See also:Haiti, See also:West Indies. Pop. about 25,000. It is situated on the S. See also:coast, at the mouth of the See also:river Ozama. Founded in 1496, it is the See also:oldest existing See also:settlement of See also:white men in the New See also:World, and perhaps the most perfect example of a See also:Spanish colonial See also:town of the 16th See also:century. It is surrounded by See also:ancient walls with bastions. The streets are straight, narrow,and intersect at right angles. The massive houses are built of See also:stone with coloured walls pierced with huge doors and windows. The See also:cathedral, in the Spanish See also:Renaissance See also:style, See also:dates from 1512, and contains the reputed See also:tomb of See also:Columbus (q.v.). The See also:cell in which he and his See also:brother were confined by See also:order of Bobadilla is still shown in the old fortress. The See also:city is the seat of an See also:archbishop. It has a small and rather poor See also:harbour, but the river is navigable for 4 M. from its mouth. The See also:climate is healthy and cool.
