Hall. In 1858, after appearing in See also:January in The Creation, he sang the See also:title-part in See also:Elijah in See also:March, both at See also:Exeter Hall. In I859 he sang at Covent See also:Garden as Hoel in the opera Dinorah, and in 1862 he appeared in See also:Italian opera in Il Trovatore. He was then engaged by Mapleson for Her See also:Majesty's, and his See also:regular connexion with the English operatic See also:stage only ceased in 1870, when he sang as Vanderdecken in The Flying Dutchman. His last appearance in opera was in the same part with the Carl See also:Rosa See also:Company at the See also:Lyceum See also:Theatre in 1876. Meanwhile, in 1861 he sang Elijah at the See also:Birmingham Festival, and in 1862 was engaged for the See also:Handel Festival at the Crystal See also:Palace. At the musical festivals and on the See also:concert stage his success was immense. In such songs as " To Anthea," " See also:Simon the Cellarer " or " Maid of See also:Athens," he was unapproachable, and his See also:oratorio singing carried on the finesttraditions of his See also:art. He was knighted in 1907. In 1858 Santley married Gertrude See also:Kemble, and their daughter, Edith Santley, had a See also:great success as a concert singer.
