WILLIAM (1751-1839) , See also:British lawyer and politician, eldest son of See also:John Adam of See also:Blair-Adam, Kinross-See also:shire, and See also:nephew of the architect noticed above, was See also:born on the and of See also:August 1751, studied at the See also:universities of See also:Edinburgh and See also:Glasgow, and passed at the Scottish See also:bar in 2773. Soon after-wards he removed to See also:England, where he entered See also:parliament in 1774, and in 1782 was called to the See also:common See also:law bar. He withdrew from parliament in 1795, entered it again in 1806 as representative of the See also:united counties of See also:Clackmannan and Kinross, and continued a member, with some interruptions, till 1811. He was a Whig and a supporter of the policy of See also:Fox. At the See also:English bar he obtained a very considerable practice. He was successively See also:attorney and See also:solicitor-See also:general to the See also:prince of See also:Wales, one of the managers of the See also:impeachment of See also:Warren See also:Hastings, and one of the counsel who defended the first See also:Lord See also:Melville when impeached. During his party's brief See also:tenure of See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office in 1806 he was See also:chancellor of the duchy of See also:Cornwall, and
was afterwards a privy councillor and lord-See also:lieutenant of Kinross-shire. In 1814 he became a See also:baron of See also:Exchequer in See also:Scotland, and was See also:chief See also:commissioner of the newly established See also:jury-See also:court for the trial of See also:civil causes, from 1815 to 183o, when it was merged in the permanent supreme tribunal. He died at Edinburgh on the 17th of See also:February 1839.
