Adam restored with much ability the twelve statues (Lycomedes) found in the So-called See also:Villa of See also:Marius at See also:Rome, and was elected a member of the Academy of St See also:Luke. Several of his most important works were executed for See also:Frederick the See also:Great in See also:Prussia. His See also:brother, also a sculptor, NIcoi s SEBASTIEN ADAM (1705-1778), known as Adam le jeune, born in Nancy, worked under equal encouragement. His first See also:work of importance was his " See also:Prometheus chained, devoured by a See also:Vulture," executed in See also:plaster in 1738, dnd carved in marble in 1763 as his " reception piece " when he was elected into the Academy. He produced the reliefs of the " See also:Birth " and " Agony of See also:Christ " for the Oratoryin See also:Paris, but his See also:chief works are the " See also:Mausoleum of See also:Cardinal de See also:Fleury " and, in particular, the See also:tomb of See also:Catherine Opalinska, See also:queen of See also:Poland (wife of See also:King See also:Stanislaus), at Nancy. A third brother, See also:FRANCOIS GASPARD BALTHASAR ADAM (1710-1761), born in Nancy, became the first sculptor of Frederick the Great and the See also:head of the atelier of See also:sculpture founded by that monarch, and passed the greater See also:part of his See also:life in Berlin. His chief works adorn the gardens and palaces of Sans Souci and See also:Potsdam. The work of the See also:brothers Adam was too ornate in See also:style to win the approval of the school that immediately followed them, and found its See also:principal opponents in See also:Bouchardon and See also:Pigalle.
