WILLIAM See also:ALEXANDER (1844-1898) , Scottish jurist and politician, was See also:born in See also:Aberdeen on the 8th of May 1844, and educated at Aberdeen See also:grammar school and university. He entered the See also:Middle See also:Temple, and was called to the See also:English See also:bar in 1867, but then was occupied mainly with teaching. In 1869 he was appointed See also:professor of See also:Roman See also:law at University See also:College, See also:London, and in 1878 professor of See also:jurisprudence, resigning that See also:chair in 1882. His name became well known during this See also:period as the author of a See also:standard See also:work on Roman law, Roman Law in the See also:- ORDER

In the See also:House of See also:Commons he was a prominent supporter of See also:Charles See also:Bradlaugh; he was the first to See also:advocate old See also:age See also:pensions, and in 1890 carried a proposal to See also:free elementary See also:education in See also:Scotland. In 1895 his See also:health See also:broke down; he retired from parliament in 1896 and died on the 21st of See also:July 1898.
