In 1791 he was elected to the legislative See also:assembly by the department of See also:Loire Inferieure, and was noted for his violent attacks upon the farmers See also:general, the See also:pope and the priests; but he was not re-elected to the See also:Convention. During the Terror, as he had belonged to the Girondin party, he was obliged to seek safety in the mountains. In 1798 he was elected to the See also:council of Five See also:Hundred by the department of Isere, and became one of' its secretaries; and in the following See also:year he voted against the See also:Directory. He took See also:office under the consulate as See also:prefect of See also:Charente Inferieure, See also:rose to be a member of the council of See also:state, and in 1804 obtained the important See also:post of director-general of the indirect taxes (droits reunis).
