In 1776 he was allowed to accept the See also:appointment of See also:superintendent of the See also:arsenal of the See also:nawab of Oudh at See also:Lucknow, retaining his rank but being ultimately placed on See also:half pay. He acquired a large See also:fortune, and on his See also:death (See also:Sept. 13, 1800) he bequeathed his residuary See also:estate to found institutions for the See also:education of See also:European See also:children at Lucknow, Calcutta and Lyons, all known by the name of " La Martiniere." That at Lucknow is the best known. It was housed in the See also:palace that he had built called See also:Constantia, which, though damaged during the See also:Mutiny, retains many See also:personal memorials of its founder.
