San Antonio de los Banos is served by the W.See also:branch of the See also:United See also:Railways of Havana. It is on the See also:banks of the Ariguanabo See also:river, which drains a See also:lake of the same name, and is itself one of the many " disappearing See also:rivers " of the See also:island; it disappears in a See also:cave near San Antonio. The town has See also:mineral springs and See also:baths, and is a summer resort of the See also:people of Havana. Though spreading over hills, the See also:plan of the town is See also:regular. The See also:tobacco of the Vuelta Abajo lands immediately around the See also:city is famous. The See also:pueblo arose in the See also:middle of the 18th See also:century as a See also:camp for convicts from See also:Mexico. It became a See also:villa in 1794. See also:Early in the 19th century refugees from Santo Domingo settled here and founded See also:coffee estates that gave the See also:place See also:great prosperity until the See also:expulsion of the See also:French in 1809; subsequently the cultivation of tobacco renewed its prosperity.
