SARNEN , the See also:

capital of the western See also:half (or Obwalden) of the Swiss See also:canton of See also:Unterwalden. It stands 1558 ft. above See also:sea-level, at the See also:north end of the See also:lake of Sarnen (3 sq. m. in extent) and on the See also:river Aa. Pop. (1900) 3949• It has a large See also:parish See also:church and two convents. In the archives is preserved the famous MS. known from the See also:colour of its binding as the See also:White See also:Book of Sarnen, which contains one of the earliest known versions of the Tell See also:legend (see TELL). Sarnen is a station on the Briinig Railway, being 42 M. from Alpnachstad, its See also:port on the lake of See also:Lucerne. (W. A. B.
