SCHLUSSELBURG , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of St See also:Petersburg, situated on See also:low ground surrounded by marshes, at the issue of the See also:river See also:Neva from See also:Lake See also:Ladoga, 40 M. by steamer E. of the See also:city of St Petersburg. Pop. (1897) 5285. It was founded in 1323 by the Novgorodians, and though after-wards lost by Russia, was reconquered by See also:Peter the See also:Great in 1702. It has a See also:cathedral and a fortress, built on an See also:island in the Neva, which is now used as a See also:political See also:prison.
