DEVRIENT, WILHELMINE (1804-1860), See also:German operatic See also:singer, was See also:born on the 6th of See also:December 1804, in See also:Hamburg, being the daughter of the actress, Sophie Schroder (1781-1868). Her first impersonation was at the See also:age of fifteen as See also:Aricia in See also:Schiller's See also:translation of See also:Racine's Phedre, and in 1821 she was received with so much See also:enthusiasm as Pamina in See also:Mozart's Zauberflote that her future career in See also:opera was assured. In 1823 she married Karl Devrient, but was separated from him in 1828, afterwards making two other marriages. Meanwhile she had maintained her popularity at See also:Dresden and elsewhere. She made her first See also:Paris See also:appearance in 1830, and she sang in See also:London in 1833 and 1837. As a singer she combined a rare quality of See also:tone with dramatic intensity of expression, which was as remarkable on the See also:concert See also:platform as in opera. She died in See also:Coburg on the 26th of See also:January 186o.
