SHUSHA , a See also:

town, formerly a fortress, of See also:Russian See also:Transcaucasia, in the See also:government of See also:Elisavetpol, in 39° 46' N. and 46° 25' E., 170 M. S.E. of See also:Tiflis, on an isolated rocky See also:eminence, 3865 ft. above See also:sea-level and accessible only from one See also:side. Pop. about 25,000, consisting of Armenians and See also:Tatars. Shusha was formerly the See also:capital of the khanate of Kara-bagh. The town is locally renowned for its carpets, and the See also:district for its excellent breed of Kara-bagh horses. See also:Leather and See also:silk are also made. The fortress, constructed in 1789, successfully withstood a See also:siege by See also:Aga Mahommed of See also:Persia in 1795, but was constrained to surrender two years afterwards. In 18o5 See also:Ibrahim See also:Khan of Kara-bagh invoked the See also:protection of See also:Russia, but the See also:annexation was not corapleted until 1822.
