SIEGBURG , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:Province, on the See also:river Sieg, 16 m. by See also:rail S.E. of See also:Cologne by the railway to See also:Giessen. Pop. (1905) 14,878. It has a royal See also:shell factory, See also:calico-See also:printing See also:mills, See also:lignite mines, See also:stone quarries and pottery and See also:tobacco factories. The See also:parish See also:church, dating from the 13th See also:century, possesses several richly decorated reliquaries of the 12th to 15th centuries. The buildings of the See also:Benedictine See also:abbey, founded in Io66, are now used as a See also:prison. The town, which was founded in the 11th century, attained the height of its prosperity in the 15th and 16th centuries owing to its pottery wares. Siegburg pitchers (Siegburger Kruge) were widely famed. Their shape was often fantastic and they are now eagerly sought by collectors. See R.
