SOBRIQUET , a See also:nickname or a See also:fancy name, usually a See also:familiar name given by others as distinct from a " See also:pseudonym " assumed as a disguise. Two See also:early variants are found, sotbriquet and soubriquet; the latter See also:form is still often used, though it is notthe correct See also:modern See also:French spelling. The first form suggests a derivation from sot, foolish, and briquet, a French See also:adaptation of Ital. brichetto, diminutive of bricco, See also:ass, See also:knave, possibly connected with briccone, See also:rogue, which is supposed to be a derivative of Ger. beechen, to break; but See also:Skeat considers this spelling to be due to popular See also:etymology, and the real origin is to be sought in the form soubriquet. See also:Littre gives an early 14th See also:century soubsbriquet as meaning a " chuck under the See also:chin," and this would be derived from soubs, mod. sous (See also:Lat. sub), under, and briquet or bruchel, the brisket, or See also:lower See also:part of the See also:throat.
