town of See also:Lombardy, See also:Italy, See also:capital of the See also:province of Sondrio, in the See also:Valtellina, 114o ft. above See also:sea-level, on the See also:river See also:Adda, 26 m. E. of See also:Lake See also:Como and 82 M. by See also:rail N.E. of See also:Milan. Pop. (1901), 4425 (town); 7707 (See also:commune). The Valtellina, of which Sondrio is the capital, produces a considerable quantity of red See also:wine. Sondrio also has See also:silk-See also:works. Above the town to the See also:north rise the snowclad peaks of the Bernina See also:group. The railway goes on to Tirano, 16 m. farther See also:east, from which diverge. the Bernina and Stelvio roads.
