STEVEDORE , a See also:

person who is engaged in the stowage of See also:cargo on See also:board a See also:ship, one who loads and unloads vessels in See also:port. The word is an See also:adaptation of the See also:Spanish eslivador, literally a See also:packer, rstinar, to See also:press or See also:pack closely, Latin slipare, to press. The Spanish word was particularly applied to the packers of See also:wool, when See also:Spain was a See also:great wool-exporting See also:country, and thus came into See also:general See also:mercantile use.
