SUMTER , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Sumter county, See also:South Carolina, U.S.A., 42 M. by See also:rail E. by S. of See also:Columbia. Pop. (1900) 5673 (316o negroes); (See also:Toro) 8109. Sumter is served by several divisions of the See also:Atlantic See also:Coast See also:line and by the See also:Southern See also:railways. It is the seat of St See also:Joseph's See also:Academy (See also:Roman See also:Catholic) for girls. The region produces See also:tobacco, vegetables and See also:cotton, and there are various manufactories in the city. Sumter was founded in 1800 and was named in See also:honour of See also:General See also:Thomas Sumter; it was first chartered as a city in 1887.
