SYNAGOGUE, See also:UNITED , an organization of See also:London See also:Jews, founded, with the See also:sanction of an See also:act of See also:parliament, in 187o. It is confined, in its See also:direct See also:work, to the See also:metropolis, but it exercises, indirectly, considerable See also:influence over the Jews of the See also:British See also:Empire. It is governed by an elected See also:council representing the constituent congregations. In religious and See also:ritual matters it is under the See also:jurisdiction of the See also:chief See also:rabbi, who is, to a certain extent, recognized throughout the empire. The See also:president of the United Synagogue in 1910 was See also:Lord See also:Rothschild. Besides providing the See also:worship of some twenty congregations, the United Synagogue directs and supports educational and charitable work. The See also:title " chief rabbi " is not found in the pre-See also:expulsion records, though, before the Jews were banished in 1290, there was an See also:official named " See also:presbyter omniuin Judaeorum Angliae." The functions of this official cannot be proved to have been ecclesiastical. The title " chief rabbi " has become well known through the See also:eminence of See also:recent occupants of the position such as See also:Solomon Hirschell (1762–1842). He was succeeded by Dr Nathan See also:Marcus See also:Adler (1803–1890), who was followed by his son, See also:Hermann Adler, who raised the position to one of much dignity and importance. Dr Hermann Adler was See also:born in See also:Hanover in 1839, graduated at See also:Leipzig, and received honorary degrees from Scotch and See also:English See also:universities, including See also:Oxford. In 1909 he received the See also:order of M.V.O. Dr Adler was elected chief rabbi in 1891.
