THARRAWADDY , a See also:town and See also:district in the See also:Pegu See also:division of See also:Lower See also:Burma. The town has a station on the railway, 68 m. N.W. from See also:Rangoon. Pop. (1901) 164.3. The district has an See also:area of 2851 sq. m. The Pegu Yoma range separates it from See also:Toungoo district, and forms the See also:water-parting between the See also:rivers See also:Irrawaddy and Sittang; there are also many small elevations. The Irrawaddy is the See also:principal navigable See also:river. Another important river is the Hlaing, which runs through the district from See also:north to See also:south, receiving from the See also:east, through numerous channels, the drainage of the Pegu Yoma Mountains, which fertilizes the See also:plain on its eastern See also:bank. There are See also:teak forests and See also:fuel reserves, covering an area of 732 sq. m. Among the See also:wild animals found in the mountains are See also:elephant, See also:rhinoceros, bison and various kinds of feathered See also:game. The rainfall in 1905 was 91.65 in. Pop. (1901) 395,570, showing an increase of 17 per cent. in the See also:decade. The railway runs through the centre of the district, with ten stations. The See also:chief towns are Gyobingauk (6030) and Thonze (6578). The See also:staple See also:crop is See also:rice, but orchards and gardens are also See also:common. The See also:history of the district is identical with that of See also:Henzada (q.v.). Tharrawaddy was formed in 1878 out of that portion of Henzada lying east of the Irrawaddy.
