TONDERN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Schleswig-See also:Holstein, on the Widane, 8 m. from the See also:North See also:Sea at Hoyer, opposite the See also:island of See also:Sylt, and 42 M. by See also:rail N.W. from Flensburg. Pop. (1900), 4244. Tondern was in See also:early days a seaport, but since the reclamation of the marshes and the dredging of the Widane See also:navigation has ceased, and vessels load and unload at Hoyer, with which the See also:place has See also:direct railway communication. The See also:trade consists chiefly in agricultural produce and See also:cattle, and there is an important See also:horse See also:market. In the See also:village of Galhus, lying about 4 M. N., were discovered, in 1639 and 1734 respectively, two See also:golden horns of the Scandinavian See also:period; these were stolen in 1802 from the Museum of See also:Northern Antiquities in See also:Copenhagen, where they had been treasured, and have never been recovered. See Karstens, See also:Die Stodt Tondern (Tondern, 1861).
