TURKESTAN, or HAZRET , a See also:town of See also:Russian Turkestan, in the See also:province of Syr-darya, on the railway from See also:Orenburg to See also:Tashkent, from which it lies 165 m. to the N.N.W. Pop. (1897), 11,592. It lies on the right See also:bank. of the Syr-darya See also:river, 20 M. from it, at an See also:altitude of 833 ft. It has a very old See also:mosque of the See also:saint Hazret-Yassavi, which attracts many pilgrims. It is an important depbt for hides, See also:wool and other produce of See also:cattle-breeding. The town was captured by the Russians in 1864.
