VYATKA , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, on the Vyatka See also:river, 304 M. by See also:rail W.N.W. of See also:Perm. Pop. 24,782. It is built on the steep hills which rise above the river and at their See also:base. Its old walls have been demolished, and its old churches built anew. It is an episcopal see and has a See also:fine See also:cathedral. Its manufactures include See also:silver and See also:copper wares, and ecclesiastical ornaments, and it has an important See also:trade in See also:corn, See also:leather, See also:tallow, candles, See also:soap, See also:wax, See also:paper and furs (exported), and in manufactured and grocery wares (imported). Vyatka was founded in 1181 by the Novgorodians, as Khlynov. In 1391 it was plundered by the See also:Tatars, and again in 1477. See also:Moscow annexed Khlynov in 1489. It received the name of Vyatka in 1780.
