WADI HALFA, or HALFA , a See also:town of the Anglo-See also:Egyptian See also:Sudan, in 21° 55' N., 31° 19' E., on the right See also:bank of the See also:Nile, 5 M. S. of the See also:northern frontier of the Sudan. It is the See also:chief town of the See also:Haifa mudiria, is 770 M. S. of See also:Cairo by See also:rail and steamer, and 575 M. N.N.W. of See also:Khartum by rail. Some 6 m. above the town is the second See also:cataract, and on the See also:west bank of the Nile opposite Haifa are the ruins of the See also:ancient Egyptian See also:city of Buhen (Bohon). Haifa is the northern See also:terminus of the Sudan railway and the See also:southern terminus of a steamboat service on the Nile, which, See also:running to Shellal (See also:Assuan), connects there with the Egyptian See also:railways. Wadi Haifa is a See also:general designation including the native See also:village of that name, the See also:camp, founded by the See also:British in 1884 as their See also:base in the operations for the See also:relief of General See also:Gordon, and the See also:civil See also:cantonment established at the same See also:time. This cantonment occupies the site of a Nubian village, and See also:round it has grown a thriving town, at first named Taufikia, but now called Haifa. It has a See also:population (1907) of about 3000. The camp is 12 m. S. of Haifa.
