WEST See also:SPRINGFIELD , a township of See also:Hampden See also:county, See also:Massachusetts, U.S.A., on the See also:Connecticut See also:river, opposite Springfield. Pop. (189o) 5077; (1900) 7105 (1501 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 9224. See also:Area, about 18 sq. m. The township is served by the See also:Boston & See also:Albany railway, and by interurban electric See also:railways to See also:Holyoke and See also:Hartford. The See also:principal villages are Merrick and West Springfield on the Connecticut river and Mittineague on the See also:Westfield river. West Springfield was originally a See also:part of Springfield. The first See also:settlement was not made, however, until about 1653, and there were few settlers until after See also:King See also:Philip's See also:War (1676). In 1696 West Springfield was organized as a See also:separate See also:parish, and in 1774 was made a separate township. Holyoke was set off from it in 1860, and Agawam in 1855.
