It is the See also:chief See also:health resort of the See also:state, and its See also:climate is one of the finest in Australia; it has a mean See also:annual temperature of 58.6° F., and the summer See also:heat is never excessive. One of the features of the town is the Marine Drive, some 51 M. in See also:circuit around the hills overlooking the harbour. Albany has several flourishing See also:industries, of which the chief are See also:brewing, See also:coach-See also:building, See also:printing and tanning. In addition it has the finest harbour in West Australia. A See also:pier extends for 1700 ft. into the See also:sea, giving safe See also:accommodation to the large steamers which See also:call at the See also:port. The See also:Great See also:Southern railway has a See also:line to the seaward end of the pier, and affords See also:direct communication with the interior of the See also:colony. The harbour is protected by forts and there is a See also:garrison in the town. King George Sound, of which Albany is the township, was first occupied in 1826 and a penal See also:settlement was established. No See also:attempt was made to colonize the locality until after this settlement was given up in 1831. Albany became a See also: municipality in 1871.
