WUNTHO , a native See also:

state of Upper See also:Burma annexed by the See also:British and incorporated in the See also:district of See also:Katha in 1892. Wuntho was classed by the Burmese as a Shan state, but was never on the same footing as the true Shan states, and only escaped be-coming an integral See also:part of the Burmese See also:empire through Burmese want of See also:system. The Shan name is Wying Hso, " the See also:city of the high." It had an See also:area of about 2400 sq. m. with 15o,000 in-habitants, and See also:lay midway between the See also:Irrawaddy and See also:Chindwin See also:rivers. When the British annexed Upper Burma in 1885 the state became a See also:refuge for rebels and See also:dacoit leaders. Finally in 1891 the state See also:broke out into open See also:rebellion, the sawbwa was deposed, and a force of 1800 troops under See also:General See also:Sir See also:George See also:Wolseley occupied the See also:town of Wuntho and reduced the state to See also:order.
