YEZIDIS , a See also:sect of See also:devil-worshippers, calling themselves Dasni, who are found in See also:Kurdistan, See also:Armenia and the See also:Caucasus. Their See also:religion has points of connexion with old Iranian and See also:Assyrian beliefs and traces of See also:Manichaeism and Nestorianism. Thus they regard the devil as the creative See also:agent of the Supreme See also:God, a reinstated fallen See also:angel who is the author of evil. They avoid mentioning his name and represent him by the See also:peacock. They regard See also:Christ as an angel in human See also:form and recognize In 1879 the Zoroastrian community of See also:Yezd numbered 6483, 1242 residing in the See also:city, 5241 in the villages; in 1892 the community numbered 6908, and as many have emigrated, it is computed that it now See also:numbers not more than 7000. See also:Mahomet as a See also:prophet with See also:Abraham and the patriarchs. They believe in a future See also:life and practise both See also:circumcision and See also:baptism. The name is probably derived from the Kurdish and See also:Persian Yazddn, God; though some have connected it with the city of Yezd, or with Yezid, the second Omayyad See also:caliph (720-24). Their sacred See also:book is called Al-Yalvah, and its See also:chief exponent was Shaikh Adi (c.12oo).
