YEZD, or YAZD , a See also:province of See also:Persia, bounded S. by See also:Kerman, W. by See also:Fars and See also:Isfahan, and N. and E. by the central See also:Persian deserts. It contains an See also:area of about 20,000 sq. m., but its See also:population barely exceeds See also:loo,000, of whom about See also:half inhabit the See also:capital of the province. Its subdivisions are: (1) the See also:city of Yezd and immediate environs; (2) Ardakan; (3) Bafk; (4) See also:Taft; (5) Kuhistan (Pish Kuh, Mian Kuh, Pusht Kuh, on the slopes and in the valleys of the Shir Kuh, a See also:part of the See also:great Central Range of Persia W. of the city of Yezd, and rising to an See also:elevation of 11,000 ft.); and (6) Shahr i Babek. The last is situated far S. near Kerman, and sometimes is regarded as part of that province. The revenues slightly exceed £6o,000 a See also:year. Much See also:silk is grown in the See also:district, but is not sufficient for the silk stuffs which Yezd manufactures with its Torso looms, and raw silk (about 75,000 lb yearly) has to be obtained from See also:Khorasan and See also:Gilan. Great quantities of felts (nimads), See also:white and yellow See also:cotton stuffs, the latter a See also:kind of See also:nankeen made of Gossypium herbaceum, are also manufactured and exported. Other exports are See also:opium, See also:madder and almonds. The See also:grain produced suffices for only two or three months' See also:consumption, and supplies have to be brought from Khorasan, so that See also:wheat and See also:barley are dearer than at other places in Persia. The part of the district situated in the See also:plain is much exposed to moving sands, which render cultivation difficult and at times impossible.
