White See also:Water) , a See also:town of the See also:Chinese See also:empire, Eastern See also:Turkestan, in 41° 7' N. and 79° 7' E. of Uch-Turfan and 270 M. N.E. of Yarkand, near the See also:left See also:bank of the Aksu See also:river, which takes its origin in the T'ien-shan (Tian-shan) mountains and joins the See also:Tarim. It belongs to the See also:series of oases (Uch-Turfan, Bai, Koucha, &c.) situated at the See also:southern See also:foot of the eastern T'ien-shan mountains. The town, which is supposed to have about 6000 houses, is enclosed by a See also:wall. It is an important centre for See also:caravan routes and has a considerable See also:trade. There are some See also:cotton manufactures; and the See also:place is celebrated for its richly ornamented See also:saddlery made from deerskin. A Chinese See also:garrison is stationed here, and See also:copper and See also:iron are wrought in the neighbourhood by exiled Chinese criminals. Extensive See also:cattle-breeding is carried on by the inhabitants.
