ALBURY , a See also:

town in See also:Goulburn See also:county, New See also:South See also:Wales, See also:Australia, 386 m. by See also:rail W.S.W. of See also:Sydney. Pop. (1901) 5§2I. It stands near the border of See also:Victoria, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Murray See also:river, here crossed by two See also:bridges, one built of See also:wood carrying a road, the other of See also:iron bearing the railway. The Murray is navigable for small steamers from this town to its mouth, a distance of 1800 See also:miles. Albury is the centre of a See also:sheep-rearing and agricultural See also:district; grapes, cereals and See also:tobacco are largely grown, and the See also:wine produced here is held in high repute throughout Australia. The See also:tree under which the first explorers encamped here in See also:November 1824 is still See also:standing in an enclosed space. Albury became a See also:municipality in 1859.
