ANNOBON, or See also:ANNO See also:Boll, an See also:island in the Gulf of See also:Guinea, in 1° 24' S. and 5° 35' E., belonging to See also:Spain. It is rro m. S.W. of St See also:Thomas. Its length is about 4 m., its breadth 2, and its See also:area 64 sq. m. Rising in some parts nearly 3000 ft. above the See also:sea, it presents a See also:succession of beautiful valleys and steep mountains, covered with See also:rich See also:woods and luxuriant vegetation. The inhabitants, some 3000 in number, are negroes and profess belief in the See also:Roman See also:Catholic faith. The See also:chief See also:town and See also:residence of the See also:governor is called St Antony (See also:San See also:Antonio de Praia). The roadstead is tolerably safe, and passing vessels take See also:advantage of it in See also:order to obtain See also:water and fresh provisions, of which Annobon contains an abundant See also:supply. The island was discovered by the Portuguese on the 1st of See also:January 1473, from which circumstance it received its name (= New See also:Year). Annobon, together with Fernando Po, was ceded to Spain by the Portuguese in 1778. The islanders revolted against their new masters and a See also:state of anarchy ensued, leading, it is averred, to an arrangement by which the island was administered by a See also:body of five natives, each of whom held the See also:office of governor during the See also:period that elapsed till ten See also:ships touched at the island. In the latter See also:part of the 19th See also:century the authority of Spain was re-established.
