APOLDA , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand-duchy of See also:Saxe See also:Weimar, near the See also:river Ilm, 9 m. E. by N. from Weimar, on the See also:main See also:line of railway from See also:Berlin via See also:Halle, to See also:Frankfort-on-Main. Pop. (1900) 20,352. It has few notable public buildings, but possesses three churches and monuments to the See also:emperor See also:Frederick III. and to See also:Christian See also:Zimmermann (1759-1842), who, by introducing the See also:hosiery and See also:cloth manufacture, made Apolda one of the most important places in Germany in these branches of See also:industry. It has also extensive dyeworks, See also:bell foundries, and manufactures of See also:steam engines, boilers and bicycles.
