ARAPAHO (possibly from the See also:Pawnee for " trader ") , a tribe of See also:North See also:American See also:Indians of Algonquian stock. They formerly ranged over the central portion of the plains between the See also:Platte and See also:Arkansas. They were a brave, warlike, predatory tribe. With the See also:Sioux and Cheyennes they waged unremitting warfare upon the Utes. The See also:southern divisions of the tribe were placed (1867) on a See also:reservation in the See also:west of See also:Indian Territory (now See also:Oklahoma), while the See also:northern are in western See also:Wyoming. The southern See also:section sold their reservations in 1892 and became American citizens. The Arapahos number in all some 2000. See INDIANS, NORTH AMERICAN; H. R.
